Activity overview
Days on Safari

While every safari lodge operates slightly differently, as a general rule you will have the opportunity to join two safari activities each day. One in the early morning and then another that leaves in the late afternoon and returns shortly after dark (may vary due to conservancy). Please note you are in no way obligated to join both of these daily activities and if you would prefer to sleep in one morning and simply join the afternoon activity (or vice versa) you are of course welcome to do so.

Note that on both your morning and evening safari activities your guide will find a scenic area to stop for a half hour where you will enjoy some light refreshments and a chance to stretch your legs.

Please chat with your guide if you have any specific interests that you would like to explore while on Safari. These could include interests such as birding or perhaps ask about the possibility of scheduling a nature walk during which you can get up close and personal with the fauna and flora that surrounds your lodge.

In addition to the other many animals you will undoubtedly see, the goal on Safari is often to find the “Big Five”.

Throughout much of the early 20th century when hunting was still the main reason international visitors made their way to Africa, these five animals were considered the most dangerous animals to hunt and were therefore prized as trophies above all others.

Fortunately, times have changed and now most guests who go on Safari want to admire and photograph these incredible animals rather than cause them any harm. The “Big Five” are the Elephant, the Rhinoceros, the Leopard, the Lion, and the Cape Buffalo.

Traditionally, leopards can often be the most difficult animal to find on Safari as their patterns allow them to blend into the bushveld at a moment’s notice. Often if you do find a leopard, they will be up a tree where they have either pulled their kill to keep it away from the prying jaws of the hyenas, or simple resting safe in the knowledge they are out of reach of any larger predators.

Area overview
Tarangire National Park

Tarangire National Park covers an undulating area of 2,850 km2 (1,100 mi2) and is an easy few hours drive from Arusha.

Famous for its giant baobabs, savannahs with scattered termite mounds, and large elephant herds, this underrated park is dominated by the perennial Tarangire River.

In the middle of the park, the Silale swamp becomes the main source of water and attracts elephants and predators as the season gets drier and drier.

There is a healthy lion population and the other predators are often spotted trailing the plains game as they head to water, or occasionally the cats can be spotted lounging in sausage trees.

Elewana Tarangire Treetops

On the path of an annual elephant migration, Tarangire Treetops sits alone in a 312km2 private wildlife area bordering Tarangire National Park, amid a landscape of rolling, baobab-studded hills. Elevated “treehouse” suites are perched high up with views over the adjacent baobab and marula trees, giving Tarangire Treetops an adventurous and exotic feel.

Encasing an impressive baobab tree, the spacious and tranquil reception, lounge, and dining rooms overlook the swimming pool and a waterhole that sees a steady flow of wild animal visitors.

Experience & Activities

With the natural beauty of the hills and dry river beds begging to be explored, guests can enjoy guided walking safaris, day or night time game drives, and the enchantment of bush dining.

Tarangire Treetops has twenty suites, with wide private balconies, and lavish furnishing. Accommodations
The rooms of Tarangire Treetops are one-of-a-kind. Elevated platforms place guests among the baobab and marula trees, creating the feel of a luxury treehouse.

Location
Situated in its own private conservancy, guests of Tarangire Treetops enjoy a secluded and private safari experience but with easy access to Tarangire National Park.

Bush walks
Located outside the National Park in Randilen Conservancy, the camp is able to conduct bush walks with guests. This activity allows guests to get “up close and personal” with nature, and experience the bush to a more intimate degree — the flora, the fauna, the animal tracks, the insects — things that can be missed from a game vehicle. Walks can be a relaxing ramble or an energetic hike.

Night game drives
A night drive in the African bush affords the opportunity to see an array of creatures who prefer the cover of night. From wide-eyed lesser galagos to ambling porcupines and elusive leopards, the African bush hosts a different assortment of creatures after dark.

Area overview
Central Serengeti

North of the southern grasslands lies the central part of the Serengeti, a beautiful area with wide open plains as far as the eye can see, dotted with small granite kopjes and seasonal rivers. The area is full of resident game and one of the highest densities of cats, especially lions, to be found anywhere in Africa. The eastern part of the central Serengeti was actually closed to tourists until just a few years ago and originally used as a cheetah research base. This stunning landscape of kopjes and grasslands is known for exceptional big cat sightings, especially cheetah.

The Serengeti is perhaps the most famous African wilderness area, its name synonymous with the notion of safari for nearly a hundred years.

This UNESCO World Heritage site covers 14,750 km2 (5,700 mi2) of premiere game viewing in Acacia woodlands, open grasslands, and undulating savannahs interspersed with seasonal rivers. The park on the northern side borders the Maasai Mara National Reserve in Kenya and, together with several other smaller reserves and conservation areas, forms the larger Mara-Serengeti ecosystem.

Elewana Serengeti Pioneer Camp

Serengeti Pioneer Camp is perched on a rocky outcrop in the southern central Serengeti and affords dramatic views of the Serengeti plains that drift endlessly into the horizon. Close to Moru Kopjes, it is a site originally chosen by world renowned researcher and film maker, Alan Root.

A camp designed for limited impact on its natural surroundings, Pioneer Camp has the feel of a 1930s mobile safari camp, but with all the modern day amenities of a luxury camp. The views from the bar and lounge are spectacular, providing the most memorable and convenient safari sundowner location.

Experience & Activities

Activities include shared game drives in custom 4×4 vehicles (exclusive use available at day rate), bush picnics at a private picnic site, sundowners, swimming pool, camp-fire dining, child-friendly activities, and balloon safaris (price not included and pre-booking required).

The camp unofficially supports the Serengeti Cheetah Project, with the managers hosting talks for the guests on the latest cheetah research in the area. Guests are provided brochures for identifying the cheetah individuals in the area and encouraged to help by reporting sightings.

The 12 tents are tastefully decorated in campaign-style safari furniture, with ensuite bathrooms offering steaming hot solar-heated showers. Each tent has a personal room attendant to look after your needs. Ensconced among the natural bush, the tented suites offer a truly back-to-nature feel.

Area overview
Zanzibar

Just a short flight from the Tanzania mainland lies the idyllic Indian Ocean archipelago of Zanzibar. Famous for intoxicating aromas of spices, beautiful white sand beaches, and warm turquoise waters, the heart of the island is undoubtedly Stone Town, a fascinating step back in time with narrow winding streets, Swahili traders and local fisherman, and the daily call to prayer in this predominantly muslim town.

In addition to its fascinating Swahili and Arab history, Zanzibar offers world class scuba diving, snorkeling, fishing and, at certain times of year, kitesurfing. There is also endemic wildlife in the Johazi Forest.

Nicknamed “Spice Island,” Zanzibar was an important part of the slave and ivory trade as a connecting point between the mainland interior and the Middle East. This made the likes of some slave traders, like Tippu Tip, very rich men. A walk around the Sultan’s Palace is reminiscent of this dark past. More recent pop culture will undoubtedly lead to the doorway of Zanzibar’s most famous son, Queen’s iconic frontman, Freddie Mercury.
